Places to stay near Cirencester
A few miles out of town you get a quieter night and somewhere obvious to park, and Cirencester is still fifteen minutes back in the car for dinner or a morning in the market place.
Pettifers Freehouse Hotel, Crudwell
Pettifers is an independent freehouse hotel in Crudwell, about eight miles south west of Cirencester on the A429, which is fifteen minutes in the car & about the same again down to Tetbury. Crudwell is in Wiltshire rather than Gloucestershire, and the hotel describes itself as being on “the southern edge of the Cotswolds”, which is fair enough. It spent decades as Mayfield House, and the self catering cottage next door still carries that name, so that is the one to search if you are trying to place it.
The Pettifer family were veterinary chemists here from 1889 to 1965, listed in the 1911 Kelly’s Directory as “Pettifer, Stephen and Son, veterinary chemists to H. M. the King”, and they held a Royal Warrant for Santovin, a worm drench for sheep. The hotel says Julian Pettifer, the television journalist, grew up in the house. The Indian restaurant is in what used to be the stable, where the animals were held while they were being treated.
Rooms are split between the main hotel and a courtyard building, from singles and classic doubles up to family rooms. Two of the ground floor courtyard rooms have level flooring and wetrooms, and they ask you to ring rather than book those two online. Next door is Mayfield Cottage, two bedrooms, self catering, with its own parking and a private courtyard garden.
Dogs are allowed in selected rooms with a supplement, and they get a sausage at breakfast. There are large walled gardens, a terrace and a patio, croquet in the summer, and three parking areas on site, free to guests, with accessible spaces if you ask.
Breakfast runs seven days a week. The restaurant is Asha Indian Kitchen, Monday to Saturday, 5.30pm to 9pm, and it is closed on Sundays, because there are two great pubs in the village that both serve food on Sundays.
Malmesbury is the next town down the same road, with Westonbirt Arboretum and the Cotswold Water Park both a short drive.
